Count the fish

Hi Kid Lab! Sarah here.

When I'm teaching a Story Lab I'm always thinking of ways to engage young children with books to help build early literacy skills and explore process art. This month we are focusing on the ocean so that means we are reading lots of great books with fish and other sea creatures. I decided to add some number practice this month with a counting jellyfish craft and with a free printable book Count the Fish. There are so many ways to get young children excited to practice counting through physical play like counting jumps or counting stairs.  Counting physical objects like toys or blocks are also an easy way to engage a child in number play.

Here is simple book that you can make with a few folds and one cut. To practice counting I had my children use a stamp pad to add colorful fingerprints to each fish and count as they added each fingerprint. My five year old wanted to practice her writing so she added a short number sentence on each page.
