Embroidery Hoop Solar System

We’ve had so much fun putting together our outer space theme activities in the Lab this month and creating a new window installation to capture the attention of our Kid Lab families. Here’s a bit more about how to make our embroidery hoop solar system in case you’d like to recreate it at home. These would look great in a kids room!

Supplies:

  • Embroidery hoops, varying sizes

  • Fabric scraps (we recommend a mix of patterns and colors)

  • Scissors

  • Hot glue gun

Directions:

  1. Set out your embroidery hoops, biggest to smallest. The biggest will be your sun, second biggest will be Jupiter, third biggest Saturn, etc.

  2. Choose fabrics according to the planet you are representing. Earth could be a green and blue pattern, Mars could be primarily red, maybe you want to show the big red spot on Jupiter, Neptune could be blue…

  3. Using hot glue, attach the fabric to the rims of the embroidery hoops. Trim any excess fabric off.

  4. To install these in the window, we strung them with fishing line. These would look great flat on a wall, or hanging from the ceiling above a crib like a mobile!
